My dad found this in an old house.

I think is like a container of some kind. The top part is removable.

Seems to me like something you would find in an old church but I really don't know. If someone could help me identify what this thing is my dad would really appreciate it :)

    antique.JPG Thanks!

Does it come apart at all? Is it a vessel of some sort?

A wisdom or treasure vase. A ritual item used in Vajrayana Buddhism, in the Himalayas.
The wisdom or treasure vase is an inexhaustible vessel for restoring balance of the elements, wisdom, longevity, health, wealth, prosperity. It also contains the wisdom and spiritual treasure gained through initiation.

    WOW! :)

And here I thought it was for holding oil for oiling camel's joints... ;)

King, I'm sure it could be used for that as well. Some camels deserve fancy containers for their oil.

David, a little more info for your dad:
The treasure vase is one of the Ashtamangala, the sacred suite of Eight Auspicious Signs, or Eight Buddhist treasures. The 'stones' are faux turquoise and faux coral, just glass paste. The red and blue colours stand for female and male, another symbol of the balance in creation.

But you don't have a hump, buck teeth, and a bad temper. As far as I know.
