Hi Everyone. I bought a lovely vase at an estate sale and would like to know more about who created it. Thanks.

You didn't buy a Satsuma vase, you bought a Kutani vase! Upper two characters say Kutani in Japanese. The lower two look to say 杯山 or 林山 and the final one is zo (made) so something like Haiyama or Rinzan as the painter. I'm not familiar with the name, but there were very many and many makers have no surviving records.

Thank you, that's an excellent source. I've searched through it a few times but can't find any mark like the one on my vase.

I did wonder about the orange colour on its rim and foot. Thank you so much!
