Help needed to identify if real or resin. I bought it 30 odd years ago from up north UK.

    I am guessing a mold at least that's what it looks like from the above picture

    I suspect resin. Thirty years ago these were appearing at every antiques fair I visited. I was pretty sure that the one that caught me was fake so I tested it with a hot needle and you could tell straight away from the smell that it was resin. If there is any possibility that it is real, don't do that as genuine scrimshaw is highly collectable.

    It is resin. Resin can be very heavy, and you've got a nice chunk there.;)

    No seriously, that was a good price for quality resin, which this is. Yes, there are also different qualities in resin.:)
