    Hi all❤️I have inherited this elephant.
    Is it antique, I’m curious as it is quite unusual

    Hi it’s quite heavy it looks like it’s made out of wood. The painting is quite crude especially the creepy eyes haha!!

    To test to see if it is ebony - try floating it in water, ebony is dense enough to sink.

    It looks like it may be from east Africa, of ebony or ironwood, which would explain the weight. But the surface looks odd. I would not expect a painted surface - just polished wood. I would also expect it to have bone or ivory tusks. It looks from the photos of the side, that tusks might be missing? No idea of age.

    Thank you everyone for your commentsHere are some more pictures. Yes the tusks have fallen out over the years and it looks like it has been painted black it seems to be wooden, the true colour can be seen underneath on the feet and on the scratches on its body

    Hi all!! I put the elephant In water and it floats so I’m guessing it’s wood.

    It could have drowned.:hilarious:

    It looks like wood or resin to me.
    I see quite a few of these, the tusks have usually fallen out due to kids playing with them.

    We had a set of them when I was young, the tusks had been replaced with matchsticks
