    Hi All

    Am bidding on this item which is being sold as Silver. I was not able to check this hallmark. Does the PS after 900 show/mean Plated Silver?
    In which case this is not silver or coin silver?
    Thank you

    What does PS mean on silver?

    "PS": PLATED STEEL.

    but I can't confirm this to be correct for your mark....

    900 is a recognised silver standard, and I have seen (and have owned) pieces of silver which were marked 900. But as for "PS", I have no clue.

    If it was 900 on its own, I'd say absolutely, it was 900 silver, or 90% purity.

    PS? No idea. It's clearly meant to be part of the 900, it's not just some separate mark, like a maker's mark or something...

    Its a picture frame.
    Not going to bid on it if it is plated at that price.

    Plated silver / silver-plate / electro plate, doesn't have a silver purity stamp on it, simply because there's no point (plus, it's illegal).

    So I would be inclined to say that, in the absence of other evidence, it probably is 900 silver. Are there any other marks?

    No these are the only marks.

    Could it be the thickness of the plating or something like that?

    No.

    Plating is stuff like "Triple-plated", "Quadruple plate" etc etc.

    Or it's measured in microns. I don't see this being a silver-plate mark.

    if that's the only mark....I'd be inclined to think it's silver.........

    but I don't know the risk factor .......

    @MrNate ...??

    Very hard to say based on that mark, I would not bid too high without more info (or seeing the rest of the piece). I will say it's a deep stamp, and it looks promising, but I've been fooled 100 times by quality plated items. The mark looks nice, but generally I'm trying to look at the entire piece to make a more accurate assessment. You can private message me photos and I'll promise not to bid and not to post them if you want. As is, it's tough because it's only one piece of the total puzzle.
