komokwa The Truth is out there...!

& what's more unusual is ...what it is....or what it's meant to be !

That much pure gold.....I'd expect to see on a masterwork....
    & this ain't that..! ;)

I don't think it's Tolkeinese? (Tolchaic?:inpain:) runic script ...I engraved a 1oz bar of silver in Tolkein script many years ago and it didn't look like this ..this seems really crude work to me ..not the bowl, but the script...maybe the head druid had shaky hands or whatever?

It's Elvish. Not rune script, but Quenya. I need to have a think, but it might be meant to be something like Galadriel's scrying bowl.

Are you in the UK? I'd be inclined to contact the Tolkien Society. I've a friend who can read Elvish, mine isn't that good though. They'd also possibly know which goldsmiths might have done this. No clue why someone would engrave the weight on it, but arty farty types can be odd.

I was thinking of the mirror of Galadriel but think that is specifically described as being silver. I'm imagining it should be something like the Cup of Elrond (or Arwen) but can't peg it to anything I remember from the main body of work.

Cultured, but still a considerable baroque pearl.

I never imagined it would be elvish. I was told by someone that they thought it looked like a Wiccan scrying bowl but they could not discern the language.

Unfortunately not in the Uk but I’m happy to send clear images of the text to anyone who may be able to translate. Haha I really want to know what it says.

Could it have originally been a caviar bowl, with the stand made at a later date?

I've emailed them with images of the bowl and requesting translation/verification. I'll keep everyone updated on what response is given. If you are interested..

Also, I'm new to the forum and want to say thanks for all of the help. My grandparents collected antiques from all over the world and have passed many of them down to my wife and I. I enjoy learning the history of these items and will definitely need more of your expertise in the future.

    Hi,
Never seen true caviar served in any metal bowl only MOP or crystal. I have been offered red roe from various strange fish in all sorts of weird bowls.
