this is at an auction I'm going to this weekend, any info before I bed on it would be great, it's just listed as an early lamp

I guess if it were Pairpoint Puffy they would have listed it as such.?

I'm sure they would have mentioned it if it were a signed Pairpoint. That name's worth money...:)

However, that is one puffy shade! I'd expect it to go for some nice $.

I would go early to try to scour the base & shade for marks. In the abscence of marks, I would have to judge it by the weight of the lamp & the feel of the glass shade. The better glass companies would finish their glass & you can usually tell by how smooth the glass feels to your touch. Older lamps have some weight to them that the newer ones do not because it cost more to produce. There is also the feel factor to the metal & the detail of the dragons.

More and more, one has to really do their homework if spending real money - repros have gotten sophisticated. Both bases and shades should be examined separately. This base looks old from what can be seen from a photo. I've seen more then a few Handel fakes....signed with convincing looking sockets (always look for Patent dates & a name such as Hubbell on antique sockets).
