It's an English Springer Spaniel. In the photo of the OP's dog, the tail has been docked as was the custom. I don't know if it is still done.

Jivvy's Springer has its tail as God designed it!

Whether they do in real life, I do not know.

But in the world of art, all things are possible. :p

As a non-hunter cat person, I just read more about hunting dogs than I ever intended.

Springer Spaniels are flushers while Brittany Spaniels are pointers.

What we have here looks to be a fluinter... or maybe a poisher.

The OP's spaniel is not really pointing. he's on the move, having just flushed out that poor little duck.

To point, the dog stands quite still, one paw raised to some extent, and nose straight at the object of his affection.

Methinks the OP has a really nice find there!

Incidentally, my last cat was strictly an indoor cat at my insistence. He made up for his incarceration by going into an absolute frenzy over our resident catbird.

That damn critter once covinced even me that he was a cat! He used to come up on the back porch, right in front of my cat, and meow like crazy. Cat's fur stood straight out and he trembled and chittered, while the bird just laughed at him.
