    Hey, @Ghopper1924 , you know much more about this type of furniture than anyone else here. What are your thoughts on this chair? Can you identify a maker, or have an opinion on desirability?
    Thanks!

    As far as I'm concerned, it's as valuable as a Victorian chair usually gets, which is to say by itself it might sell for $400-$600 at auction here in the U.S. Midwest. Only Belter and Meeks would sell for more.

    So my best guess is that this is a walnut armchair, part of a parlor set ca. 1865-75, by John Jelliff of Newark, New Jersey. There is an outside chance it could be Pottier & Stymus, but this feels more like Jelliff. Jelliff's workshop specialized in using heads such as these in exactly these positions. It was in large part the shop's trademark, although of course they weren't the only ones to do it. Imitators are usually pretty obvious because of the lesser (simpler, usually) quality of the work.

    I was at an auction a couple of years ago where a full Jelliff parlor set, much like this, sold for $8K, which was not a bad price for the Midwest. Decades ago it would have been at last $25K. But we all know that sad story.....

    I guess that not many of us own an étagère -- The ones you posted are beautiful. Thank you!

    Nope, don't have one, but if that's a piece of Crewel work hanging on the wall in the background, it's beautiful!!! Kind of looks like the canopy on top of our bed!!!

    Thanks all :)

    @Aquitaine that is a French tapestry from 1870. The theme is "The Tree of Life" with the Lion of God sleeping contentedly in the roots of the "tree." Since I know very little about sewing I can't say if it's crewel work or not, but it's definitely a tapestry, if that helps.

    Usually @verybrad expresses himself in crystal clear fashion, but I confess that, due no doubt to my own limitations, I'm puzzled by this.

    Google curtis jere sculpture - there were a lot of metal sculptures produced in mid-century by the jere company, and you come across them a lot if looking at mid century stuff.

    @Aquitaine

    Good eye! Ms. G confirmed that the tapestry is crewel work.

    Here's a "whatnot," which I referred to earlier. Note the small, 3 shelf size and drawer. It fits anywhere. Mahogany and mahogany veneers. In this case, the real worth in what you see is Ms. Ghopper's Beatrix Potter collection. Do any of you collect them? I think hers are from the 1940s-70s. P1010365.JPG P1010366.JPG P1010367.JPG

    I just did a search through old threads here, and found that @SBSVC said that she is a big fan of Beatrix Potter. I don't know about her collections, but thought I would tag her just in case.

    I don't actively seek them out. However, when I find them at reasonable prices I often keep them.
    I have many of the ones your wife has.
