Eh, should forgive 'antiquesathome' and 'SurreyAntiques' - both of their profiles claim they're 120 years old, surely a bit of rudeness is allowable at that advanced age...;)

I didn't witnessed all the dispute, just wanted to say that, to my eyes, it looks like dry\weathered pressed turtle shell.

Funny that you said that as some part of a turtle crossed my mind but I’ve a lot of turtle (a 70s hippie bag made out of a shell-cowboy boots, etc) and I know that turtle shell has tiles (scales) so I eliminated that. Never would have thought of abalone but as soon as I looked at the striated patterning against komokwa’s pics I saw that it was spot on. I never knew it was used without the high finish.

I don't see any nacreous origin indication... Horn and turtle shell can be worked\assembled by heat, steam and press, nearly as plastic. I had an old battered dark turtle shell hair brush that showed that "swirl" pattern, except it was still rather shiny:)

Interesting. TY Do you not think it’s abalone? I have never knowingly seen manipulated turtle shell.

TY Too bad we’re in the time of covid or I’d suggest the piece be taken to a local natural history museum.

Interesting but what I meant was that I’ve never seen turtle shell manipulated to completely change the patterning of the shell. Sorry I wasn’t clear.
