The latest on the hoard disposal was tonight's Village Hall sale. I consigned some very third rate stuff to one of those auctions that hire a hall every month to run an evening sale. Not everything was from the hoard, some was random stuff from the shed, but the total was about £700 , so counting hoard bits only, probably about £500 toward the hoard haul.

While I was there I had a chat with my friend from the good auction which will be selling the more interesting items that I have illustrated recently, many in this thread. November seems to be the date to look out for, as the most suitable sale, and I am in no hurry, so the wait is OK with me. Some of the items will be waiting for a Mantiques sale next summer!.

The village hall was interesting, loads of stuff sold for next to nothing, you could have bought half the hall full for under £10, often only £2 or £4. Mostly not rubbish, either, just modern stuff that everyone there seemed to have enough of already.

A bunch of Royal Doulton 'Spirit' horses, this one sold for about £14 unlike ebay.

A 5 foot high Capodimonte framed mirror sold for about £40, it must have cost a grand new. Other good modern mirrors were well nigh given away around a tenner. The was no catalogue and viewing was for 2 hours before the sale and with many mixed and box lots.

The audience were mostly like me, middle-aged or old and middle or working class. My stuff mostly went to two or three regular dealers, for dealers prices.

Someone wanting to actually buy stuff for a home would have a field day, but I got the impression that pretty well everyone had pretty well everything that they wanted already, and it was just a bit of an evening out for them.

Still,it cleared some stuff and it's a few pounds more for the 'buying something really good ' fund.

I did say I'd give updates about the sales, and I have just had the pre-sale list from the better class auction room. About 30 lots of Manchester hoard items with a total lower estimate of about (the equivalent of) $2800 are up for grabs on November the 14th at Fieldings Auctioneers in Stourbridge.

They were the people who got me £230 for that flapper dress that was estimated at £50 to £80, so I expect the minimum estimates may be a bit less than what I finally get, but I have said to no reserve it all so someone may get a few bargains.

The sale will be online so anyone interested could look in.

One item is the US CDV album with the eagle cover that I posted about some time ago.

Many of the higher value and more unusual items are being held back for more appropriate sales.

Edit, something is a bit wonky with the board.

Odds are someone buys that and then sells it again here, unless an American finds it first of course. Either way, I'm expecting a fat packet out of that one.

I do those litle auctions, and they can go very well indeed. Sold a lot of seriously good silver for a friend and it made quite a bit, with far lower commission than the bigger boys. So a good nett. Fieldings are pretty good - they do a terrific glass auction over three days in the summer.

Fieldings is now, in my opinion, the top auction house in the West Midlands. I have known the founder for about 25 years and bought from there since they were using a hired village hall for the sales. The rise has been well deserved, they are both friendly and professional. I think Nick chooses the employees with a view to their people skills as well as their antiques ability.

I have had some very good buys over the years but nowadays I'd rather sell there, cheap lots are a bit of a rarity.

Internet bidding might be good for sellers but as a buyer it severely reduces the chance of anything slipping under the radar.

Going back to CVS, we have more here than one can imagine. True they have pushed out all the other pharmacies. CVS annoys me now because people who have a smart phone can download an app and get special discounts but if you don't have a mobile device, tough luck.
I don't dare go into CVS on Friday after 2 PM, the store is packed solid with customers and not enough staff.

That may be so Kings, it is also the start of the Sabbath so many need to get stuff done early before sun down.

LOL, not really. The assorted household items --paper towels, paper plates, etc makes it a very popular local store for the Sabbath.
They have some kosher items there but not strictly kosher.

Not to mention on the highways! My regular supermarket is the go-to for the Sabbath here; they have a Kosher meat department and deli, so it makes sense. I like raiding that section too; all sorts of oddities turn up, including some of the best Greek-style yogurt I ever found. Mehadrin.
