Fantastic bottle collection, I did buy 1 bottle since I got rid of my old collection and I've done nothing to research it since, I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Sometimes you can buy what you cannot afford. You just can’t afford to keep it!

Find something dirt cheap that could bring you a couple thousand in profit. You’d love to own it but you can’t afford to not take that couple thousand profit on it. So close, yet so far awa…..

There are few people that collect at a more veracious rate than me. You may have missed my point. Every once in a blue moon you score something you could not typically afford. You’d love to add it to your collection but sooner or later you may realize you sadly literally can’t afford to keep it. The same point you made about not being able to buy what you can’t afford but kind of in reverse. I’m sure you’ve been there.

I always have a eye on resale value but never sell, does that still make me a collector? :angelic:

So glad I am not the only one who collects collections.:hilarious:
    I am the same, and I still think I'm a collector. Maybe I'm delusional.

I don't think there's a collector out there who doesn't look at prices, it's a part of the game.

I think we both have collections of auto-immune problems; that makes us collectors whether we want to be or not. Might as well play the game since we're stuck with the name!

My grandmother collected tea cups. My grandfather collected stamps, coins, tools amd electronics. He had a reel to reel tape recorder that he used to record us kids when we came over to visit. My mother was addicted to reading books. As soon as they came out, she bought another book. I lost my love of reading when attending college. I read too many tiresome books that bored me. Now I only read cookbooks.

No I spend £12 on a £300 item, that's why I'm not living in my workshop after my long suffering wife has chucked me out of the house

Funny..... I thought about this for a while .......

I borrowed a $ 20 from my Moms purse , and bought my 1st pocket knife on a school road trip to Upper Canada Village .... I put the change back in her purse...

    I couldn't afford that.....

In University I couldn't afford a 1/4 pound of blond leb , so I put together a group of like minded folks , and we scored the quarter pound........
I couldn't afford that on my own.

Other than that , I can't ever remember buying something I really wanted, that I couldn't afford........ but bought it anyways !

Then keeping an eye on the value of your collection...... doesn't make u any less of a collector...... now does it ?
It just makes you a smart collector !!

Have u ever spent $100.... on a $100 item..... because u just had to have it in your collection ....... still no less of a collector !!!;););)

I'm more inclined to spend $10 on a $100 item; I can't afford the $100, but might go as high as $40 if I really wanted it.

I saw a pretty cuff bracelet at the estate sale on Friday. I'd have bought it, but it had no marks and they wanted $40 for under $20 in metal weight. No sale or hope of same. Had it had signatures from an artist I'd collect it might have been a different story. On the other hand, I have a copper cuff here that is easily worth the $40, but it's signed Rebaijes - whole new ballgame. (not that I paid $40, but another collector would have. )

Normally I go by the rule of 50% less than the all day long price on ebay, local auctions can be less expensive but I rule them out because not everyone knows the sort of things I collect. I do buy things at 100% that I think have dropped way beyond what they should be, I bought a Davenport desk for 10% of what the price would have been 15 years before that was the going rate at the time, it's now worth 5x what I paid.

In the end, it comes down to items that are esthetically interesting, has history, and is something you can can afford. There are just so many rabbit holes to go down in the world of antiques. About 15 years ago I got set off on a clock case binge (Just can't afford interesting complete European clocks), but an empty case can be very affordable and for $5. simply add a quartz movement. When I saw this large Gothic/Medieval revival French 1890's case for $40. at the flea market early one morn . . . I'd found a new love !
