How (un)common is it for gold earrings to have non-gold posts?

Very common, it's stronger and many people want non allergenic.

Thank you, Ownedbybear! Is this true for both vintage/antique and modern?

In my experience, yes, you get it for both old and new.

Agree. Gold too soft, some people allergic and a more expensive option.

Stainless steel posts are often a selling point too.

In my experience it's the other way around. Stainless posts are the province of costume jewelry. I've never found gold earrings with stainless posts, but plenty of costume earrings with gold posts.

If, e.g., stainless posts are used, I presume the earring itself would contain the gold karat stamp? Is it ever the case where the posts are stamped 925 silver but the earrings themselves contain gold?

Never seen it. Seen the other way around though.
