It's for water, but you know that. My gut feel is that it's newish art pottery.

I'm thinking old, and industrial, like maybe in production of something.
ya I know the water aspect

It looks fairly modern to me but not having it in hand its hard to tell but with no wear on the base and the state of the glaze I would stick with newer art pottery.

I don't know that "ID this crock" works so well either. I have these Irish uncles...

I think this is the capacity. Have you tried measuring how much water it holds? upload_2018-10-20_0-15-39.png

It looks to me like a genuinely old drinking water dispenser. The back is unfinished, so it was expected to sit against a wall. The stoneware would have helped keep it cold. I don't know if marking it H2O was just facetious or it was likely to be used in a place where there were containers of stuff you would not want to drink.

    This is the same idea:

Guessing there would have to have been another piece, maybe a short hose, now lost/disintegrated.

I see two small holes plugged with corks, one on the top, one near the spout. There is also a hole in the photo with the symbols on container. Is that a third hole? Where is it?

I haven't but in sitting it aside like items my best guess would be five gallons which is 18.9 litres.
My guess is it's a pattern number as it appears on the lid and the base.
A fellow that dropped in a month ago speculated it was Nov. 1919.

Maybe the lid is read this way?

"stuff you would not want to drink" yes my thinking in terms of perhaps an industrial use. Like in a textile dye-house where it sat beside a similar container that had acetic acid or some such in it and the two fed a dye vat below. Rather "water" then "h2o" from non industrial or scientific purpose.
Or maybe a toitlet tank. Or yes maybe ice water as it is very clean inside.
I found it back in March in Jarvis, Ontario.
    Sean Murphy from Paris, Ontario,
http://www.canadianbottlecollectors.com/collections/sean_murphy_collection.html was by on Thursday and his two cents, not verbatim, were it's old, it's unique, it was probably not manufactured here re salt glaze finish. Perhaps a potter like Doulton. Doulton did make sewer and industrial wares.
This piqued my curiosity hence posting it here Friday that one of the experts here might recognize it.

I am still curious about the number & locations of the small holes, which I'm assuming were to allow air in so that a vacuum would not be created & water could flow out.

So the question is what places would call water H2O?
    Chemistry Labs
    Pharmacy
