    Cluttered is right about the nails. They've been there for awhile, about 130 years. Kim, when you see Victorian pieces with marble tops, the marble will ALWAYS just be "laying there." No glue! These pieces are usually heavy enough to keep themselves in place. I've got a hall tree with a marble piece almost exactly like yours; I see no reason not to believe its original.

    So yes, on to the next one! I envy you just getting started with hunting Victorian furniture!
