interesting column carving and carved dogwood? flowers on the interior.

Over here its known as a bureau, a writing desk with drawers and typically an angled top opening downwards to form a writing surface.

that starts with you pulling the drawers and looking for any marks that could help us....
barring that there were many companies making similar items , so without clues...

    it's a long shot..

Flowers don't look like dogwood, they are probably jut generic flowers.

really? i've never seen carved flowers on an early desk like this. thought that may be a signature. i don't have access to the piece beyond these photos until i see in person next week.

Well, although the carving could potentially be interesting, I don't see the piece as very distinctive from these pictures. The inside is nice enough, but the backboards showing would be a no-no for the more stylish cabinetmaker (it is, however, fortunate, as it shows it is old)

i should mention the people offering it once owned a christopher townsend chest. probably inherited. they have some Connecticut pieces, english and a good bit of stuff that looks like it came from Sky City...i.e. junk.

i thought it was some type of transitional piece since you see similar full carved column chests in later periods. turns out the quarter-columns and interior were added later probably 1850s to a late 18th desk.
