Featured Interesting 1920s-40s (??) lace and linen embroidered cloth.

From the same sale as those cool novelty skirts I asked about in this forum. 25" across. It really seemed unusual to me, the flowers have wooden centers. Curious what others think as well as dating.

I could use some keywords for a listing! General thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I'd agree with your dating, it has an Art Deco look, but I've never seen one like it before.

Thanks, all. In general not the kind of thing I buy for resale, but it was so unusual with clear age, I felt obligated to get it.

Are we thinking this was from a pattern? I don't see any markings on the back, but it is so uniform. Also would the crotchet (?) edges have been done by hand??

I wonder if @Northern Lights Lodge might have ideas.

Wow! that IS unusual! I'm glad you did a "side view" of the wood centers as I couldn't picture it when you were describing it! Yes, Deco era for sure! LOL... those bumps would prohibit folks setting glasses down on it! As for the lace; it is machine. Over all a very cool piece!!

I found another version of this, so it was a kit. I think the part around the edges was left to the person embroidering the piece. I felt this was Arts and Crafts, but I'm not such an expert.

I want to be sure I am describing the edging correctly since it seems like this was added later and not part of the original kit. I just got back from a neighbors who does a lot of sewing. She thought this was "crotchet" or "tatting"? Is it more accurate to say "lace"? Thank you!

 

I always thought "tatting" was what we call "frivolité", made with loops.

Just checked, it is the same as frivolité, so made with interconnected loops.

It does not have elements found in tatting. But it does have the geometric look of handmade filet lace... and the woven look of handmade bobbin lace. So, if it were me; I'd call it "machine made". It does have an Arts and Crafts "feel" to it also... but I still vote for Deco.
