I bought a huge box of jewellery for a fiver at the car boot sale. Mostly scrap but a few gems including this bracelet. To begin with I thought it was costume. (obviously whoever put it there did too even though I don't think they had a clue what was in the box as this was in the filth at the bottom) One of the links is covered in verdigris and the metal is deteriorating. I was a bit slow on the uptake to realise that it was only the one link and when I looked closer it has had a bad repair and that one link has been replaced with base metal. All the others are stamped for gold on the rings. There is also a bit of random base metal chain added.

I am really interested to know about the gems. I thought glass to begin with but now I'm not so sure as look a bit like stone?. Seems a mish-mash of gems. The gold leaf bit seems to be layered on top.

It is filthy and needs a good clean in order to even attempt to study the hallmarks.

Any tips on cleaning something like this- do you think it's ok to give it a gentle scrub with dish washing soap and a toothbrush?. When it's clean I will test the gems too.

Love to hear any thoughts on this please.

Thankyou
