An old boyfriend gave this choker and earring set to my sister maybe 35 years ago. She never wore it, and gave it to me a couple of months ago to do what I want with it. I don't wear yellow gold, so guess what that is? :D The necklace clasp and the earring backs are marked 14K.

Could be opal. Are those oranges & yellow there all the time or a lighting artifact?

I'd take a diamond tester to them and see if they ring up as glass. Generally that design is faux pearl with the coatings gone, but the 14k findings make me wonder. Opal is another idea - i.e. what she said.

Bronwen - they look pale gray.

Ruth - if you mean faux pearl with the coatings worn off, these were never worn and have been in a box for 35 years, so not worn off. It could have been removed, if that's what you mean.

Possible. I've done it before, but the gold looks awfully good if it got dunked in acetone. I suspect some sort of stone too, but you never know. I've seen glass pearls look like that with the coating removed.

I had the same question as Brownen. In the photo they have sort of a orange glow, so are these just being photographed near a regular light? Anything reflecting an orange color on them? If you look at them outside do you get this color like the photo or are they just pale gray?

Not something I'm instantly familiar with. The 14K also makes me think you should find out what is what. It is a bit unusual to string glass on a 14K chain and ditto with the earrings, but you never know.

    Maybe others will have ideas.

What about jade? Maybe he was passionately in love with your sister. ;)

The light shining through the beads was the natural light from the kitchen window.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

NOT to throw a Monkey Wrench in the works, BUT, could the Gold color from the chains be adding a slightly orange-ish hue to the works???? Or were you wearing something with an orange hue to it at the time you took the images?? JUST a thought..........

    Beautiful set, Book.:)
I suspect it is chalcedony, and I agree with @Aquitaine that it could be the gold that makes the stones look more orangey.

I'll take another picture. What color background would be best?

I don't think opal. Monstone or chalcedony seems most likely. Plain black background.

Well that black construction paper didn't seem to work very well. I'll try white.

DH took these outside on a piece of white cardboard. They're not much of an improvement. :(
