This sampler is Dated 1868 and comprised of Crown Butterfly Birds Flowers.

I realize the date does not necessarily mean it is that old.
Does anyone here have the expertise to tell me if it is indeed from 1868?
    Measurements: 12” x 8”.

    Thanks much!

I just hope you had a happy thursday.

I don't know if your sampler is antique, but it does have age. Let's wait for the others.

Unless it's a matter of screen display, several of those thread colors lead me to believe the stitching is contemporary.

Edit: I knew there was something else bothering me...I'm bothered by the amount of wear/discoloration to the ground that isn't in the thread... and, what's up with the ground having the ticking-esque stripe?

Currently, I vote for new stitching on old fabric.

I agree Jivvy, also the design seems far too fresh and bright compared to the backing, ... Joy.

Well, now I'm looking on another monitor (the threads that looked dayglo, look less so) and I'm not as certain. :bucktooth:

    Is the thread wool?

Really skeptical about this being that old, primarily because of the variety of colors used and the fact that they are so consistently bright. As synthetic aniline dyes were being introduced after 1856, it may have been possible to have that variety of colors, but it is unusual. I suppose it may have been folded up in a drawer since the mid-19th century, but usually you can see a significant difference in the colors on the front (more faded) and on the back. The stitches are also rather large / crude.

My first thoughts as well, but I suspect this is Berlin wool (though not what I'd think of as "Berlin woolwork").

I think the ground is a Penelope canvas and I'm wondering if that matches the 1868 date, but haven't found anything definitive on that.

I found this example after you suggested Berlin wool. I had never heard of that before. What do you think??? The colors are very similar to the one I have.

I still have questions about the canvas, but that could just be my ignorance. I'm guessing the blue threads are just guides, but I'm not familiar with seeing that on needlework where it would show in the final product -- could be intended as a needlepoint canvas where they would be (traditionally) covered?

I don't know. You need someone with better info on the canvas.

Found newspaper reference to "penelope canvas" in the 1840s, so that's not out-of-sync with the 1868 date.

I found this antique Berlin wool sampler with what looks like the same canvas.

OK! - great examples, and not the kind of thing I have seen before. I am used to dreary American school girl samplers. Glad to learn something new.
