    Hi folks

something else i picked up at the local auction yesterday. Paid £15 but its not without a few faults, which are are all on the reverse so not really visible when framed

think i would have paid 15 for the frame alone as its got a cool locking mechanism and handle

the main fault is the snapped off guard part on the reverse, which i didn't notice when bidding, also a loose slip, held together

the intact guard is pretty stunning though, hoping its bone and not ivory

the back is pretty cool as well, but part of guard is missing on that side

    any info or comments appreciated

It is beautiful, charlie.:woot::woot: Pity about the damage, but for £15 you did very, very well.
I like the background colour, it makes the fan stand out.
Yes, it is. This type of art is called Shibayama.
    Difficult to see, but....:bag:

Are you planning on restoring the frame?

awesome info, many thanks Aj, thats another new term on me. Reading the article its amazing how many different materials went into the guard inlay, was wondering that, maybe a bit of coral and mop in there

the backing is a red velvet like fabric

yeah a bummer about the damage, so more of a decorative value i would think.

the frame is pretty much in good form just wear showing, so would be an easy fix up with some gold enamel paint i have

not sure when the frame is from though

What a cool frame with the handle and recessed brass mounting hardware.

I like the fan too. The guards are excellent. I prefer the damaged side so for me I’d rather have the damage on the other side but we don’t get a choice in those matters. The market on Japanese fans hasn’t been super kind to me but I’ve only had pretty basic ones. At $15 I don’t think you can go wrong. Particularly with that frame. You can hang it where the recessed hardware is right? Or is that just to open/access the interior?

Hi mate, yeah i prefer the figural side as well, but for decorational factor, probably best as is

no you can't hang by the hardware ring as pulling it opens the mechanism
it has a normal 2 side rings and string for hanging

    Yes, there is.:)
Yes, but fan collectors also buy framed fans, so there is still money to be made both for its decorative value and its value as a fan. Just disclose the damage, which I am sure you will.:)

Beautiful piece and yes, the box alone worth well what you paid for this lot. The fan is valued so much more to all who appreciate shibayama work of which I am one of since the box I posted years ago(and later reposted repaired). Thank you again AJ for my education back then on shibayama. You did well Charlie.

‘I am picking up a Chinese fan on Tuesday that I recently bid&won. Glad to see I am not the only one still in this market. Paid $30US so a bit envious of your £15:mad::hilarious:. Love yours and have high hopes for what’s coming my way(the photos were not very good, just know it is displayed well on a stand) I *crosses fingers* I did as well as you.

update; correction, upon revisiting it was our invaluable 2manybooks, who first educated me on shibayama. Thank you too. (Just have so much wonderful educated info crammed in to my little brain listed under AJ, I sometimes get confused. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Been studying your peace closely and appreciating it even more. Quick question to the experts, what’s with this big blade of grass? And for the three characters below and to the right of it, are those common Chinese depiction of a nose. Not questioning its authenticity, trying to learn more. Asking for a friend. :bucktooth:

Update ll; my lovely Chinese educated Lillei, just informed me that the blade of grass is none other than a fallen tree, and the noses are very typical Japanese. I live and learn. Beautiful!
