Featured Japanese lacquered panel- what do I have here?

    Beautiful, and I love the presentation of the lid in the box! Excellent, less is more IMHO. Beautiful piece of art, and £10 thoroughly well spent!

    I do not think that it is a mon as such, depictions of butterlies are quite well known as mon, but they are usually sort of symetrical, if you know what I mean. That said, there is the Ageha mon, which though called a mon isn't a famiuly badge AFAIK.

    Thank you for the extra information on the butterfly! It now looks to me similar to the Three tomoe, which is not originally a family crest, tho some clans do adopt it? That is commonly seen on all sorts of lacquered stuff too:wideyed:
