Just found this at a local G Sale-not (imho) great thick sculpted lacquerware, but the price point was too good.
The chop points to Heian Zohiko, a historic Kyoto lacquerware house. It's 10 inches across by 4 inches high.I think the technique used for the image is the simpler 'Hira Maki-e' (Flat Makie). The fancier type is raised Taka Maki-e (looks like bas-relief,like our Chinese member Tammy used to share).
PS- The chop is actually gold colored.

Good score, Bosko! I think I can count 27 scallops; can you confirm? Also, is it on wood, or on a hard resin (plastic) substrate? BTW, the logo is inverted...
I have several pieces from Zohiko. One similar to yours I gave to my sweetie a few years ago; it's on plastic. I'll get a pic of it an' show it here.

Thanks Whit-27 scallops. This one's on wood-it's a salad bowl. I'll post a pic of the spoon & fork.
