Hello! I bought this doll (I think it's a Japanese marionette), but I couldn't find any useful information about the type of these dolls. Maybe you can help identify her? photo_2024-04-29 11.06.22.jpeg photo_2024-04-29 11.06.24.jpeg

She is charming, but I am not sure she is a marionette. Maybe a doll.
She seems to be entirely handmade, maybe home made, and her kimono is hand embroidered.
What are her arms and legs made of?

The only Japanese puppet theatre I know is 'Bunraku'. Bunraku puppets look more refined than your cutie, for instance they have heads and hands carved from wood and painted with great attention to detail. They are also bigger than yours.

    A page on Bunraku:

Thanks, I read about on Bunraku, but those dolls look completely different. I have never seen anything similar to this doll. It may have been hanging somewhere in the house (it has hooks on fingers and pins in feet).

The hands and feet are made of wire wrapped in textiles. The body and head are made of some kind of soft filler.

She looks about 100 years old, but I'm not sure what kind of toys children had at that time)

    Welcome to Antiquers, Tesssa :)

Those tacks protruding from the bottom of the wood are curious. I can't tell if they held something on, or if they're meant to hold her down onto something.

Traditional geta have 2 crosspieces, 1 in front and 1 in back.

Love the simplicity of the embroidered fans on her kimono.

Could you show us what the hooks look like?

And by pins do you mean the nails that held the missing crosspieces on the soles of her sandals?

I took a closer look - it was not a hook, but the fabric had slipped off the wire on hand:artist: Another interesting thing is that she has wire inside her arms and legs, and her limbs can be bent. That is, she was standing somewhere)

I see. That can be repaired pretty easily.
The pins on her sandals are indeed where the crosspieces used to be. Those can be replaced.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

that rough thread face and hands along with what looks like plywood shoes , must be a key to her age ...but I can't match them..:(:(

    I'm leaning towards post ww2

Even if she's 20 years old, I won't like this cutie any less)
(And I can finally wash her:D)
