Hi all - I found this Japanese porcelain vase at a house sale. It was covered in grime and looked like it had been in the house for decades. I got it cleaned up and am trying to figure out the artist signature on the bottom. Any help would be much appreciated - TIA!

    Welcome Bob.
    I don't think it's Japanese.

Thanks! The characters didn’t look Chinese to me - more Japanese. Any ideas who the artist is?

It's a nice vase, Japanese for sure - the style reminds me of some Fukagawa I've seen, but mark isn't that factory ...again, nice vase though!

Thanks! The mark really has me stymied. I’ve looked through a few Japanese porcelain websites but can’t seem to pin it down. Hoping someone might recognize it.

Thanks for re-posting the picture! I was worried that it was the wrong size and that the orientation was incorrect. Apologies!

Definitely think this is Japanese - as noted by blooey it resembles Fukagawa pottery. Not an Italian mark.

I already looked at Gotheborg but didn't see anything that would help. So I'm going to tag @Mat

    I didn't expect to. ;) But I looked anyway.

Storm's already here in more ways than one. ;) 38 degrees and rain all day.

I looked at this this morning and was puzzled by it.
My reaction was the same as Bulldogs.

It looks like it is airbrushed, not hand painted. Then I saw the mark. I too saw letters that were made to look like Japanese. N over ? Cars

I wondered if it isn't a studio potter. Waited to see what others said.
Thanks for the tag. Still not sure what to make of this.

I see N over TP and what looks like ARS. I'm still looking.

Hi all - I have an update! The vase is early 20th c Japanese porcelain and was made by Matsukaze. This ID was definitely a puzzler! Hand painted artist signatures are hard enough for me when they are in my native language- Japanese/Chinese characters present a whole new level of difficulty.
