I was not able to find anything on the artist so I guess not a hobbyist piece.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

    I like it a lot. We're guessing 1936, right?
I couldn't find that name on my lists either.
Oil, judging by texturing in the signature-photo?

It is oil on wooden board. Looks like there is a cigarette smoke tarnishing.
    Jos. stands for Joseph?
Not sure if the artist was advanced but must have had some kind of a training.
Wonder if the artist witnessed the scene or maybe used photograph or other images.

HERE is a 1963 reference to a watercolor by a Joseph Martinovich. Of course, we don't know if that is the same artist, but I will keep looking...

...and HERE is a reference to a gift of art from the Joseph Martinovich estate to a Wisconsin art museum.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Morgen strikes again! Bravo! Only 27 years' separation... a reasonable chunk of a lifetime... with room on either end for mis-spent youth and golden years...

A 1966 newspaper blurb reported: "Waukesha Palettiers...to view demonstrations by portrait artist Joseph Martinovich..."

    Thanks to all of you.
Would be interesting to see more examples of his work but seems like there is nothing online.
I think he was a good artist but never made it to the top.
Maybe I should keep the piece in case he gets recognized one day.

I wish it wasn't so expensive to get paintings cleaned. This one would shine.I think its lovely.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

An old Mexican remedy... take slices of bread, rub, press gently... it does an amazing job of brightening old images...
