[QUOTE="bluumz, post: 2639284, member: 649"]I picked up this interesting item at an estate sale a few years ago... a plastic?/celluloid? compact. Pictured on the front is the Eiffel Tower and six airplanes. I'm trying to decide it's age and just what theme it's meant to depict: Travel to Paris? War time in Paris? I find it unusual that there are SIX planes… and a little flag at the very top of the Tower. Makes me lean toward it being a patriotic theme. But "Made in France" is, of course, written in English… So possibly a travel souvenir? Or a gift for the girlfriend back home?

I used a touch of water to clean the powder around the "Made in France" marking and I see now that there is a capital letter S there, too. I've heard of Stratton compacts but those are made in England. The sifter is cardboard.

I've been told they are passenger, rather than war/fighting, planes. The flag at the top of the Eiffel tower does not appear to be the French tri-color flag...? Previous suggestions made to me include commemorating the Opening of the Orly airport in 1932, a souvenir of a 1930s/40s Paris Air Show, or a post-WW2 Liberation of Paris girlfriend gift?

Others I have shown it to mostly seem to lean toward 1930s but I've nothing really definite.
