Large antique photograph - is it Villefranche-sur-Mer?

This tinted photograph is 40" long and 18" tall. When I saw it, the first thing that popped into my head was the scene in An Affair to Remember when Cary Grant stops in to see his grandmother in Villefranche-sur-Mer. What do you think? DSCN2257.JPG

Is that a palm tree behind him? Do they grow at Villefranche-sur-Mer?

I am not sure of location but I suppose there are several similar views in different places. He looks like a monk... is there a monastery there?

There is a monastery there - I have to see if I can do a virtual tour.
    They do have palm trees.

Thanks -- I hope that some of us can help with this. We seem to do well with crowdsourcing the identification of old photos. :)

    It's certainly Cote D'Azur.

    Thanks Bear.

What do people think about the size? Do you think it's a panoramic photo or an enlargement?

Enlargement, I'd say, there's not enough for a panorama. That may not be a monastery he's in: there's covered roads and pathways on the cliffs. Having said that, the town below is very familiar. I'm off to google a bit, but wondering if it's Menton.

OK, I think it's Menton. Have a look at some images: there's a massive church above the town with cloisters.

This interior and courtyard scenes in the 1957 Affair to Remember of Cary Grant's "Nickie" grandmother's villa were filmed in a studio. The views, panorama shots, were shot at Valliefranche-sur-Mar.

A to R was a remake of 1939 movie Love Affair with Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. I believe in this movie the grandmother is living in Porto Santo in Madeira.
