I misunderstood. I was imagining them ladling holy water on the child's head.

 

Now I understand what you meant. It would have been a lot of work to smooth down the metal after a sand casting. I appreciate your insights into the process. I had no idea they were made this way. Do they still make metal implements like this?

 

The molds can be made with a variety of materials like bronze,soap stone ,wood,silicon putty,etc. A number of historical reenactment groups may have someone making utensils at events. Video example...
