    hi folks

something i found in a recycle centre shop today, cost about £5 with 4 other pieces

thought it looked quite nice and with some age to it, quite large as well

    presuming painted abalone shell

not sure where it would have originated from

thinking maybe rolled gold by the way it has come off in small areas at the back

    any info very help

    any thoughts appreciated

I’ve got something similar. I thought from Italy, souvenir tour things but wait for others. I’ll see if I can find mine. I paid £30 for mine and it’s damaged:(

Mines completely closed in on the back with some sort of brass type metal and damp has crept underneath it in the sky and the paint has lifted a bit in areas although on first glance it looks ok.

Too interesting. "Victorian reverse painted brooch" brings up other examples.

Blimey. You stole that. I don't think it's pinchbeck, that doesn't peel, it's solid. More likely to be gold fronted on a rolled back. I also think later: mid to late 19th, Grand Tour .
