Last of the Swagger Sticks

    Swagger.jpg When Cavalry Officers left their horses for Mechanized Armour, they kept their crops etc. The riding crops of WWII Officers became their Swagger Sticks. This one belonged to my father as a Korean war Infantry officer. The 17TH Infantry Regiment USA: their commanding Officer issued all of his Officers a swagger Stick. Seen here: adorned with a carved dragon and a Buffalo Nickel as well as a 50 caliber round. swag4a.jpg swag3.jpg swag2.jpg swag1.jpg

    I have a tough time thinking that Army officers in WWII rode horses and therefore had riding crops.

    Well, actually Montgomery, Patton, Macarthur and the like were Officers from previous times. Many kept their crops etc. and Patton wore the baggy riding pants also.

    In the UK swagger sticks are still used for ceremonal use in the Army.

    Liverpool City Police now known as Merseyside Police still use them, they are carried by officers of rank and are called signalling sticks.
