Have to wonder what was stitched to the side of the base - perhaps a striker?

I do wonder whether these little things were made almost en masse, and then modified for purpose.

Ditto-I think Treen would've been a big cottage,or very small factory industry in the UK,'tatting' too.Is 'tatting' the right word for embroidery, crocheting, etc ?

Tatting is a form of very fine yarn/thread work with intricate designs a specialty. It's difficult on a good day to find anyone who still knows how it's done. There used to be people in Jamaica who still used the artform to make hats, but that was 40 years ago. Crochet is a different critter. Different tools, thicker yarns, etc. Even "crochet thread" is thicker than tatting threads.

My Yugoslavian Granny used to do something (according to the Web) called 'Cutwork' or 'cut work', also known as 'Punto Tagliato' in Italian- a needlework technique in which portions of a textile, typically cotton or linen, are cut away and the resulting "hole" is reinforced and filled with embroidery or needle lace.

My father's mother (American) made some of it too. It was popular everywhere for a while. Now the fancy textiles sit at estate sales, except for the new grannycore and cottagecore types. They're finally realizing how pretty it is.

Now if someone would write a damn book about 'Granny Chic' we'd be off to the races !

These days it's all about the Insta, Tiktok, Pinterest (for millennials and older) etc. Books are not so much.

Probably right Ruth.I remember when You'd walk into a serious antique shop, and thru the curtain in the corner, you'd spy bookshelves stuffed with thick reference books-a personal antique library if you will.
    PS-...and frequently,one person owned the entire shop-no collectives !

Haaa yeah at one point we were told to throw out all our media because it's all online now! Now everyone is fast realizing the Internet is becoming smaller than it used to be. We went from Independent websites and forums like this to social media and restrictive search engines that only want to sell us things. SEO meant websites started copy pasting each other to have "content" to insert ads into. And now AI is making deepfakes and incorrect "research" answers.

Books are the way to go. They aren't always right either but moreso then what we've got now!

I find old auction catalogues very useful.

I used to have several used copies of Miller's Antique Price Guide around. With all the color illustrations and short descriptors it was a load of fun and instructive. The prices-who knows-trendy one quarter, next quarter not.
The downside-here in the States,no malls with Regency,Empire or any kind of 16th to 18th century inventory to actually see up close and actually touch.

So true! I'm a book junkie, an addiction passed down to my brothers and me from my Mom - most of my books are in storage right now and I miss them.

There are errors in references, both in print and online, often those are revealed by online access to information from old catalogs, ads and articles, and the 'worldwide' aspect of the internet has provided information that was previously difficult to find...

I have a couple of old Millers books and a Warman one. I think. Back in the 90s, reference books were still the way to go. Yes, apparently big changes in search engines and independent websites are losing out. Boo!

Having read just about every (non-ancient) Cameo book I can get my paws on, I've seen a lot of incorrect things. But!! Research is only as good as what you have available to you and we have a lot of access to info and each other for sure.

We definitely benefit from multiple fans instead of just singular experts. I'm sure many book writers of the past would have been as thrilled to have both.
