When I saw BMRT's lipstick case..it reminded me to ask you about this set I've had for 25 years....

The Zippo guts are from the USA.

I can’t provide input but it’s beautiful. So much detail, even the hammered effect on the bottom.

nice! I would date the case post-filtered cigarettes, so say post 1940, possibly later depending on what size fags it actually holds and whether or not it was designed to hold the entire (soft) packet (not only the cigarettes). I think those came out in the late 50s, early 60s.

If it was Japan then probably a blank case and acanthus engraving done else where.

Post WWII, were sold in Japan and also exported to the U.S. for sale in import /gift shops - they're not uncommon and no reason to think that they weren't engraved in Japan - if you poke around, will likely find similar marked 'Japan'...

If memory serves, these were also very popular in duty free shops in West Indies/Caribbean. I bought not a few there through the years, because they did hold the cigarette packet (softpack) without unloading it. I may have a few strays still cowering in odd corners - will have to check. Thanks for the reminder!

Beautiful, komo. Those Japanese hammered parts give them a bit more character than similar European work, I think. The rather angular engraving gives it away as non-European.
West.:playful: Just about the first country you come across when you go west from Canada. If you don't strand on Kamchatka, that is.

What "angular" engraving? I see nothing in the engraving to point to any region, east or west.

Impressive! From my limited knowledge, I believe the Japanese silver standard is 95%, so that would all make sense to me.
