<p>[QUOTE="IvaPan, post: 9423296, member: 78949"]Agree with Kyra that the item is probably Russian make. Not only the material but the scene on the lid is a typical Russian Siberian scene with a wooden hut and fir trees around. There are examples in Etsy of similar boxes, 3 inches in diameter but with different scenes, described as jewelry boxes.</p><p><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/1391321658/birch-bark-jewelry-box-moscow-st-basils?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=birch+bark+box&ref=sr_gallery-2-21&organic_search_click=1" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/1391321658/birch-bark-jewelry-box-moscow-st-basils?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=birch+bark+box&ref=sr_gallery-2-21&organic_search_click=1" rel="nofollow">Birch Bark Jewelry Box Moscow St Basil's Church 3 - Etsy</a></p><p><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/1405563191/birch-bark-jewelry-box-russian-troyka-28?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=birch+bark+box&ref=sr_gallery-1-15&organic_search_click=1" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/1405563191/birch-bark-jewelry-box-russian-troyka-28?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=birch+bark+box&ref=sr_gallery-1-15&organic_search_click=1" rel="nofollow">Birch Bark Jewelry Box Russian Troyka 2.8 - Etsy</a></p><p>I think the makers mark on the bottom is upside down on the photo.
