This came up today in a local auction house

Described as 1920 Oil on Canvas entitled 'Portrait' by Edward Oldham, Hazel House, Dormansland, Surrey 45 x 65cm (C0)

Can't find anything of the painter

Any thoughts ?, only have this small image

Going there to check it out tomoz

Edward A Oldham portrait artist was born in 1864. It appears that Hazel House was the family home for several generations.

Interesting thanks bakers, 1920s looks right with those glasses

Will be interesting to see what it looks like up close

Not the greatest picture, but promising signs

Hazel House was located on the High Street (No. 5) and here's a period post card of same.

    I like the hands

Oil paintings can look deceivingly bad at a certain angle with the light shining on them like this

I think portraits though unless famous, are risky ground

Landscapes are one thing, but who wants a portrait of somebody of no relevance to themselves

Very stagey, isn't he? The pose, the tie, the pipe.

I think unless painted by a listed artist or a portrait that can really evoke a sense of the time, has a limited audience

    We will have to see

    Very Brideshead Revisited.

Especially a Poindexter. Now...a portrait of a fair lady would be a different story altogether.

Agreed. Also not finding it very interesting or appealing. Just dull and even the face (not much character) But as you say it’s not a great photo of the painting. (Maybe in person it’s a different story)

Reminds me of a portrait of W.B. Yeats.
