It is a very plausible theory - I will try and find out some more about him.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

My advice would be, check it out and WRITE IT DOWN!! I’m now the last of the older members of my family and I’m ALWAYS wishing I’d asked more questions of older relatives, while we had them!!!! THAT’S a Lovely piece to have and keep!!!

That's a lovely item, I had my eye on a similar one at auction last week, it fetched over £1000 (UK). It also didn't have any back story, photo or hair locket, so that would increase the interest for your piece. Great that you have such a nice example if it is related to your family.

I noticed someone mention about the pearls. Cultured pearls began around 1890, they inserted small beads into the living shells and the nacre grew around them. You can sometimes see this with a strong light shining through a cultured beaded pearl. Later and continuing today they are created by nucleation, and many pearls are grown in one shell. Prior to around 1890 the pearls would have been natural, hence why they are so expensive and sought after compared to cultured examples.

@Willcpfc that is a beauty, and how wonderful it has been kept in your family!

What am I (not) seeing on the left?
Is it a missing gem or decoration or latch?.

What occupied the space at 9 o'clock in the garter? Beautiful locket.
