    Hello everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about this piece of carved opal? I think it is a cobra. The gold bail is stamped 14k. I'm hoping someone could tell me about the type of opal and the quality of this piece from the pictures? Also, I'm curious what it may sell for if anyone has an idea. Thanks in advance!

The bail is 375 which is 9 carat gold not 14.

    I agree, 375, 9 carat/karat.
Gorgeous pendant. It is a cobra.
I can't tell from the photos if the opal is natural or lab created. When you move the stone about, do the coloured flecks move about, even vanish, or do they stay in the one place?

If that cobra moves by itself, I'm out of here!

Forgot to say before, about the gold fineness, 14k is 585.

The colored specks do seem to vanish and reappear as I move the pendant. Especially the orange flecks. Is this a good indicator that it is natural opal? It is much more vibrant and colorful in person. It was hard to capture many of the flecks with the camera. I'm trying to find out what type of opal it is. I think it looks like Brazillian opal or white opal.

Thank you! The pendant without the bail is a little over 3/4 of an inch tall and about 1/2 an inch wide at the center.

I'm also not a fan of snakes, but I definitely appreciate the intricate detail and beauty of this piece!

    It is.
Opals are a pain to photograph.
I think it is a bit too white for Brazilian, which is a crystal opal, translucent with a wonderful colour play.
It looks like a white opal, and could be a South Australian. Places like Coober Pedy or Mintabie.

Brazilian opal is white base and crystal with the same low quality to gem ratings as Australian Coober Pedy opal.

Ah, new to me, thank you. I must say I haven't seen much Brazilian, and the ones I have seen were always true crystal opal.
