It is poker work or pyrography. Have never heard of this form being called a spinning chair but I suppose it could be. The basic form is that of a medieval utilitarian chair. Skinny tall back chairs, in general, are often called hall chairs. If this is shorter at the seat than normal, it could well be a spinning chair.

The form of this chair was revived and popular during the Arts and Crafts decorating period and the pyrography fits right with this. This would put it early 20th century on into the 30s. A lot of this type of thing came in pyrography kits. A company called Flemish Arts was the largest maker of these kits. Their patterns tended to be more floral so I don't know if this is one of theirs or not.

I did a dumb thing and sold a turn of the century pyrography catalog last year. I should have kept it for reference!

Paul, I like the design in the wood, which has a great textural effect.

Why didn't I think of that! :banghead: :joyful:

I tried bringing out the image in the seat more. I think this is the best I can do... not great, but better I hope. It looks to me like she's reading a book or possibly doing needlework or something similar.

Could the last words be "of Madame Jane"?

Can you try posting a larger image? Or even several closeups. If you click on the words "Full Image" it will appear in the body of the thread like this. image of women 3.jpg

You and I both! To me, it looks as if the lady is riding a horse. And her costume looks somewhat Polish, or Hungarian. The headress is reminiscent of Russia.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

A can't quite make the letters match this theory, but... will put it out there anyway.

Ye Complete Historie of Ladiye Jane -- maybe?

I have not seen "lady" spelled "ladiye" before. I have seen it spelled "ladye" -- And that last word looks like "Jam" more than it does "Jane." But thought the phrase above would go along with the picture.

Oh, I see that Jane was mentioned in the first post... so I feel better about that.
