    Given lions, design may be from Ancient Near Eastern. Try Scythia; wonderful goldsmiths.

    Double spirals are to be found in most cultures, which is why it is important to look at the entire piece.
    They often originated as symbols of interconnectedness between different worlds or realities. But symbolism changes as a culture changes. Old meanings are forgotten and new interpretations made, or symbols are just seen as decorative.
    That was my advice to Chopin in a private conversation, and circumstantial clues pointed to Scythian as well. I will not go into it any further, at his request.

    The shape is similar to a pelta, the shield used by the Amazons.

    It's stylized into a shape that would not make for good body protection, more like this decoration on a piano:

    Everyone, before we get carried away by spirals etc, it has already been identified as Scythian through other ways. As I said, I can't go into it any further.

    But since we are on spirals, Chinese Neolithic pottery:):
