As an aside, music awards of this type in civilian life are generally called medals.

 

I noticed that distinction yesterday also while doing some additional looking around.

I had never heard of any of this before finding this piece & started looking around.

When I got them I just gave them a cursory glance & I didn't pay attention to even the name on the lid of the box. I hadn't even put a loupe to them until the other day because I hadn't even given the thought of the one being sterling a thought.

I took some different photos of both pieces yesterday since this is all shined up. On what I am assuming is a bronze medal I noticed some possible base metal coming through on the edges & it is definitely not as finished off on the edges as the silver one.

I do wonder why the family gave away or sold this, given its history. I wonder if it's worth contacting the descedants - or maybe Kneller Hall would be interested.

 

I wonder the same thing about the family but seeing the stuff that has come through the auction house over the years has made me very jaded.

 

I know what you mean, I'm horrified at what shows up at car boot sales.
