Wanted some input on likely age and style. What I know is it's gouache on paper measuring 15 x 22 inches (w/o frame). It was purchased at Christie's London in 1980. Not signed on front - might pull it from frame. Reminds me of the 19th century nautical renderings of ships in trouble, but the colors are a bit unusual. Seems that framing was done 40 years ago. s-l1600 (9).jpg s-l1600 (11).jpg

I like it and the palette is terrific. I’d definitely pull it and check the back. First word that comes to mind for me is “illustrative”.

Looks like a military frigate???? The blue ocean is "off" to my way of thinking, though, for those stormy skies!! What are those 2 vertical black things?? Not 'stacks' I hope....if so, never saw any looking like them....BTWDIK!!!!

I'd definitely pull & see what it says....what makes you think the frame was done 40 years ago....or is that based on Christie's sale in 1980?!

Yes, they'e stacks, it's a transitional steam/sail ship as was seen 1840-90... the hull does look military.

I think this would have come from Christie's S. Ken sales, auctions that were pretty much like backroom sales in provincial towns.
It's OK, but that's about it IMO

I googled "ironclad frigate painting" and clicked Images. You can see many examples. They all seem to have two stacks instead of one so this may be the artist's imagination.
