I believe this piece to be extremely old(if wrong I need to go back to the drawing board). When looking through a microscope most all of the bubbles in the porcelain have either discolored, broke or have a halo ring. The crackle edges are discoloring. It doesnt look old, it looks really old. Even the damaged area looks like it happened centuries ago.

Boy am I inserting foot in mouth on this one.

He had it on display as a centerpiece upstairs in a room just filled with stuff. Absolutely no marks of time or maker. Can anybody help ID this?

I’m a ceramics know-almost-nothing, but it looks late 20th C. To me. The vent hole in bottom is very neat and I’m thinking it was molded with some machine-made mold, or mold-making stuff. Maker swooshed on some brown stuff with a paintbrush in a quickie antiquing attempt. Also the base is too pristine, if it was very old the edges would be chipped up and base would be worn. As it is, it looks like base has been on a velvet-lined surface and not out in the real world. You may need to have that microscope recalibrated. This is kitsch.

You may very well be right. Just notice a hole below her hand, and when I looked inside where the hole was there is what apears to me as a broken thin rope.*shrugs*

Just one added note, a micro loupe does not need adjustments, just focused clearly and the base looks far from smooth. Perhaps your monitor?

The crazing and discoloration of same. The base tells me no one was making a fake, just a nice copy of one that really was old. I'd have checked out that little glass bit on the far left of the top shelf. I don't think it's an old one, but....

Well if u want to believe it is old or very old, be my guest, if it pleases u, doesn’t matter to me, is still what I think of as kitsch. I will say you are learning in a good way, buy something, study it, get other opinions, etc. People who don’t buy or aren’t able to buy things this way are at a disadvantage as far as the time it’ll take them to learn how to separate good items from junk.

Yes, it does look like a modern “copy.” Anytime you see that brown wash on the base, it is almost certainly a southeast Asian production. Nothing wrong with it, just don’t try to sell it as an antique!

    Don't get discouraged.

For me Asian items are the hardest to learn about.
They have been making items for thousands of years. Have been copying their own works for another thousand years. They are very proficient at it, and are still copying their own items.

We would still like to see the other items you purchased.
