I picked up this vase in an antique mall as I just fell in love with the painting. It looks French, perhaps circa 1900? I checked as many books and online sites I could think of and nothing has surfaced. Any help would be appreciated! It is 13 1/2 inches tall. No signs that this was a decanter. The top doesn't appear to hold a stopper so I am guessing it is a vase. DSC07353 (2).JPG DSC07362 (2).JPG

What is the material? Hard to tell from the photo if it's glass or porcelain. Also a photo of the base might be of help to someone.

My idle guess is Bohemian glass.

It has murex shells around the base but they don't look like koi.

Thanks for your input. I should have mentioned that it is glass. I am not sure what murex shells are but I will look them up. Thank you. You don't think the fish are koi? I will try to get another photo of the base posted. The one photo I did take wouldn't post because it was too large. I am not great with a camera but am trying!

Thank you for taking the time to look at this. I got the base photo to post and a close up of the shells. I looked up "Murex" shells and you hit the nail on the head...thank you for that Bronwen!

Just a note from an old shell collector, those are Murex pecten, commonly called 'Venus comb' (packed away somewhere, have a decent collection of specimen murex and cowries)...

Thanks for that information Cheryl! I never heard of Murex before and was amazed at the variety when I did a search.
