It is like the Dutch word reder, someone who owns a fleet of ships. Is it Iver who is the skipsreder?

If so, he would have been one of the more prosperous citizens of Larvik, and could have commissioned a portrait of his wife Cathrine.
So your "Medieval Princess" is probably an 18th century ship owner's wife.;)
Bok means book, so probably a more formal language used in books and official correspondence?

  2. Looks like Hans Elligers (1797-1867) was listed as a Skipsreder, Son of Iver Elligers. So I would only conclude that his father was a ship owner as well. Can anyone translate this? Google apparently can not translate scandinavian yet... thumbnail_IMG_0382.jpg thumbnail_IMG_0383.jpg

I think you have most of the translations already on the previous page.
    Additional:
    Side means page.
    Slektssider means family page.

  4. I've spent the day so far researching the family tree of Iver Jorgen Elligers and found out quite a bit of information. First off, he is a direct descendant of Otmar Elliger- his great grandfather(1633-1688) who was a famous still life painter (blomster og frugtmaler) and then in 1670 the court painter to the Elector of Brandenburg (Duke of Prussia). Still looking for what his father and grandfather did... I'll be back with more information as I find it. Would love some input if anyone out there is good at this genealogy stuff.... Also, does anyone know if this link to a famous artist makes my painting valuable?

  5. OK... another update... Ottmar Elliger the younger (Iver's grandfather, was also a pretty famous artist... Here's one of his works-

  6. And Ivers father was listed as a Merchant. So lastly Ivers himself was a shipowner. I think the only question left is who is the sitter and painter?

A painting once owned by the great-grandson of a reasonably well-known painter? No.;)
I am related to Fernand Léger, but that doesn't add value to anything I own.
I think the sitter could be Iver's wife Cathrine.
The painter wouldn't be anyone famous. While it is a sweet portrait, the artistry is not the same level as that of famous painters.

  8. Ah... too bad. I was hoping his grandfather being the Court Painter to the Duke of Prussia in the 1600's would make the family artwork valuable. But I'm not so sure about the sitter being Iver's wife since it's signed M. Elligers. His wives were A. Bugge and C. Gether. Maybe his mother?- Maren Elligers? I am getting the painting back soon and will take it to someone that can read that label. Maybe it states who painted it and who the sitter is. The very ast name showing on that label is Margrethe Elligers.... so maybe that's it?

A painting is generally signed by the artist. I assume the sitter and the painter are not one and the same, the positioning of the sitter is not like other self-portraits. So the sitter could still be Iver's wife, since her name is on the label on the back.

If there is any evidence that Maren Elligers painted, she could be M. Elligers the painter.
