Just picked this one up at estate sale. It appears to be all handmade, including the hinges. The rivets are steel and some copper. (the Knights-Helmet1.jpg Knights-Helmet2.jpg Knights-Helmet3.jpg Knights-Helmet4.jpg Knights-Helmet5.jpg Knights-Helmet6.jpg Knights-Helmet7.jpg Knights-Helmet8.jpg Knights-Helmet9.jpg Knights-Helmet10.jpg rivets are all hand hammered) Helmet is very sturdy and is about 6lbs. Any thoughts on origin, or age. This is so cool!!

Very difficult to date, however its hinge mechanism looks c20th to me. The floral detailing may help with identifying its age perhaps? There are also many enthusiasts who stage historical battles etc., and they often pay particular attention to detail when having their own armours produced by blacksmiths. You need to study photos of known original helmets to make a comparison, particularly its construction. It could also be a theatrical stage-set piece, or used in a movie? It looks like a feather plumes can be displayed on the back of it... I agree its very decorative and as been well constructed with use in mind!

You'd also need a can opener to get out of it?

18th century isn't exactly during medieval times.

Perhaps the guy who made it was doing knight-shift work?

Notice this one has separate sections for the head and shoulders so the head can move at least downwards. Yours is fixed at this point. I know nothing about armory and perhaps this was not an important element, but it is one of the differences between your piece and the example.

I'm quite sure it is a repro. Google SCA helmets, there are lots of manufacturers. They price around $100 and up, depending on the construction, type and embellishments.
