Dear Dagger, you where not far of thinking it was delft, here are two delft vases with similair figures. But as far as i know delft dit not make porcelain only ceramic to imitate porcelain. My jar is made of heavy thick porcelain. https://www.roots.gov.sg/Collection-Landing/listing/1135808

I was thinking more Olive Oil, from de ol’ Popeye, the sailor. J Dagger makes a lot of the same observation I was seeing, I just was leaving the door a cracked open to give you some hope.

However you make a good argument via those links, but even the best of the best auction houses have been duped over the years many times. They shouldn’t be the final word. While the motif is wrong to me, my wife(Chinese) says that back then some did look similar like that. So there is that. But still the clay doesn’t appear as I would think pure white Ming clay to be. Nor do I see any red iron ore coloring seeping out from under the glaze for its supposed age. The best we can do is opine on the photos, good bad or ugly it’s all we can do, so take it at that with a grain of salt. We can’t draw the conclusion.

Bottom line, you have it in your hands and feel and see it better than we can so if you feel good about it, it holds all the value you give to it, and can display well.

Could there be a mark under the Refuge sticker?
Let's hope it isn't there to hide a "Made in China" stamp ;)

good question, but no reign mark on the bottom. but that could be a good thing because replicas are usualy always marked. And as bidamount.com says look at the mark last first look at the paiting and color. I have carefully looked at my jar and divers sites and my jar does have more good signs than bad signs. Bud it is clear to me that most dealers stay away from chinese porcelain because it is so problemetic. And understand why the dealer that sold it to me thought it was a replica. It takes hands on experience and a real proffessional eye to tell if it is real or fake. To be sure i have contacted a chinese specialist auctiohouse to see what they say.

It goes without saying, but I am sure we would all love to hear what your expert has to say and what lead to their reasoning.

A viewpoint from an appraiser of Chinese antiquities -

"Unless a piece is typical of its type, trying to get Chinese works of art and porcelain correctly appraised and valued is nigh on impossible.
The three factors causing this situation are as follows:

    1) Too many good fakes around causing uncertainty.
    2) Not enough knowledge around to deal with the uncertainties.
    3) Individual reputation at stake."

Thanks for the heads up, but it is looking possitve after i read the article. allot of what he mentioned as positive point for real age is the case with my jar. And many aspects can not be seen on the photo's i posted. but i didn't want to overload with allot of photo's.

Which specific features described in the article do you see in your piece?

I am not an expert in Ming porcelain. My critique is more about your methodology. Rather than looking at things critically, (willing to consider that they might be less than fantastic finds), you may be subject to confirmation bias - "people’s tendency to process information by looking for, or interpreting, information that is consistent with their existing beliefs...and it results in a person ignoring information that is inconsistent with their beliefs."

An extraordinary claim - you have stumbled upon a rare and valuable Ming dynasty porcelain - requires extraordinary proof.

But I will be very happy for you if it proves to be true.

I’d say you make a good point with your links to figures that look cartoony. They still look more in a Chinese manner than yours to my eye but they do look cartoon like. I still think your piece doesn’t look right but I’m not a professional. Send it off to Sothebys and Peter Combs. They’ll tell you with pretty good certainty what you have. Sothebys for free, I just sent photos to them the other night of something. Peter charges $15 or so. That’s as good as you’ll do for getting a final word via photos.

Let's just wait for at least one expert opinion. It will be a learning experience for all of us.
