I dunno why... I do go daily to thrifts. I miss the fleas in San Francisco - the Marin City one (long gone) was in a beautiful location across the Bay Bridge. We all went to it, and it was such a fun way to spend Sunday AM - the vendors were a great blend of antique and junk. No tube socks or wrench sets!

The local drive-ins are still great here in LA, you just have to know which days are "dealer days."

I'm having a hard time with daylight savings time ending - seems like I'm getting up so late - but I'll cruise on down this week! I'll keep you guys posted! :) Have a great week!

(I'm showing vintage clothes at a friend's warehouse show this weekend - barely attended, but hopefully today picks up. It's a good way for me to offload at least some stuff that needs to go OUT!)

Long ago I went to the one out in....Sante Fe Springs? Would that be it Scouts?
It had a sign that stated 'Flea Market'.
When I searched the whole place for nothing old I got my money back. :p

I have been to the Alameda one and it was great but also long ago as well as the one out by San Jose.

In October I hit the Meadowlands in NJ twice.

I also literally go to thrifts daily as well since I have some very close by.

I haven't been to a flea mkt in years. I've been downsizing for years, slowly, because, you can imagine, it's difficult to do. Seems all worth doing in life is difficult!

..Back to the trenches, have a great day all!

The flea markets around here are terrible, all junk and not particularly safe. We had a really good flea market back in the day when Roosevelt Raceway was still up and running.

King of Things, I didn't know The Meadowlands had a flea market. Last time I was there was to watch the trotters and pacers race and that was many moons ago.
Meadowlands is quite a drive from here too so I will stick to the local sales when is start going again.

Thanks Scouts for your kind thoughts.

I'll have to look up other Roosevelt race tracks as Roosevelt stadium in Jersey City once had stock car racing inside.
This was also the stadium Jackie Robinson played his first pro game in.

I miss the old flea markets. Flea markets changed around here years ago. Now, it seems they all sell the same stuff you see at the Dollar Store. In the "old days" people would load up the car and sell what they now sell at yard sales.

Pearls sorry to hear you're not feeling well, I hope you feel better soon.

Sending positive vibes to the caregivers too. Distraction is good for the mind, body and soul.

The Roosevelt Raceway I was referring to was on Long Island in Garden City.
It is just a memory now. Great flea market and wonderful harness race track. Now it is pricey homes on that spot. :-(

    Thanks Mill Cove!

say_it_slowly The worst prison is a closed heart

The little flea market up the road closed years ago but had deteriorated into mostly junky new socks and the like.

Before I broke myself and ran into other issues I had started doing a monthly flea market that is set up in a multi level parking garage that actually is very well attended. They set a limit so you have to have at least 50% used items and so far not too junky that I've seen. Problem is I'm usually by myself so I don't get to go shopping:(. Oh well things here are fairly good right at the moment and I think I might be able to slip out for a day when it opens so yea!

I love the feel of a market, it seems like the way people have transacted business since time immemorial.

I used to love to go to the flea market in the French Quarter in New Orleans (even had some rough times out working in it) but that was long before the city required the vendors there to enroll in sales tax payments and occupational license requirements. Since then, the souvenir vendors (sunglasses, t-shirts, etc) have taken over with their new merchandise.

I suspect this has happened in many places. ??

In the Boston area, I think yard and garage sales had a lot to do with the decline of the flea market. Once that concept became popular, people liked the convenience of not having to pack up, get up at 4 a.m. to get into the flea market and set up and then pack up again to go home. It was so much easier/convenient to put an ad in the paper and let people come to you at a more reasonable hour. People could set up and break down at their own pace because they were already at home.

I understand that though all the buyers were at the flea market. ;)

I very much enjoyed selling at the Rose Bowl though it was over an hour away from me. Never knew who you would see there and what you may find. :)

That's exactly why I miss the flea markets. You met more people. People were more relaxed because they weren't driving around from place to place in a hurry. People were more friendly, less stressed out.

I always set up with someone else so we could take breaks and go look around. I would buy things and resell them the same day. I picked up a huge Oriental rug in the morning. I paid $25 and sold it a few hours later for $300. You can't do that if you have a yard sale.

I feel like the odd man out here...

I have never in my life been to a flea market, a yard sale, OR a thrift store! I feel as if I've missed out, big time!
