Featured murky oil sketch

hi folks

found this today in a house clearance shop, its not brilliant, more of a sketch but thought worth £10

14 by 10", probably painted on the spot

looks to have some age

cant quite decide what it is. most be some kind of river boat, as there are reflections, even though the river is not obvious

any thought or info appreciated

 

Interesting,yes looks like somekind of weird hillbilly houseboat. Nice label that. What are you thinking maybe 1950’s or so?

 

How about a thatched boat house?

Maybe it's depicting a 19th century boat-house where a disused hulk has been dragged a short way inland and converted into a house. A famous if fictional example is Peggoty’s boat-house in David Copperfield. Sometimes they were upturned, other times built on like yours.

Charlie-Label looks 19th century to me,a hut near the river.How You'd find more framed pieces by Mr. Wilson...unless You contacted the Hereford Historical Society.There's folks who devote their lives to preserving the history of the home town & county,bless 'em.

Late 19th label which fits. Boat house rather than barn, ours look different.

I wouldn't call it impressionistic. You called it "more of a sketch". I'd stick with that. This guy looks like he knew something about painting, so I don't think the appearance is accidental, as it is on so many amateur paintings. He might have been drawing on a Barbizan sensibility.
