A museum is trying to catalog some items that have been in storage and don't seem to match the acquisition records. Need a name and function for this item that's part metal and part wood. It is about 15 in. Wide and 20 in. Long. I made some guesses but I'd like to get some independent opinions for the museum to consider. Thanks.

The pictures keep jumping around, appearing and disappearing. Takes a lllloooooonnnnggggg, sssslllloooowwww time to load and then they go poof!

From what I did see, maybe part of a grist mill grain grinder apparatus? There was a post with similar wood constructed pieces not long ago. I think you could find it if you search grain mill.

Thanks, I failed to mention that the "bullet-shaped" object comes out of its hole, and is 14" long x 4 3/4" diameter. It is kept from turning (or made to turn) maintaining angular alignment with with the outer cylinder-like thing. Sorry the photos are acting badly 4 u, wonder if anyone else has that problem?

The six grooves and corresponding projections are straight linear form.

Where's Andre of Hamptonauction? He's got the right skills to figure this thing out, but of course I don't want to put him on the spot or anything like that! Someone point the Andre light at the side of a tall building please.

This isn't much better than a guess, but I do recall seeing a wooden machine for rifling gun barrels. It was fairly complicated and had sliding parts.

Perhaps a part? The solid and half holes in the metal part indicate that it swings at some point.

Thanks-My first guess was a casting pattern but then I remembered those have all wood parts usually,so I'm stuck.
