    unfortunately no number on the drum. My mom used to just listen to it and tell me the name. She was an amazing woman.

    my mom had a similar piano music box that played "Amazing Grace" (IIRC)

    Well, thanks for that encouraging note. It's even trickier than you'd have had reason to suspect, since the overwound music box in question is sealed inside an antique stuffed animal. If there's hope, though, perhaps the requisite surgery is justified.

    Do you think you can get to the mechanism without damaging The animal?

    Thanks for the follow-up question! The basic answer is 'no,' he'll have to be cut open. Hopefully his heretofore pristine hide can be sewn shut after the procedure without leaving too hideous a scar (maybe I should ask my heart surgeon about it).
